What Year Is It?

This was sent to me by a friend recently and I chuckled a bit, but then I gave it more thought. Because on top of the three listed above, there’s also Mad Max: Fury Road, Poltergeist, and the Gem and the Holograms movie. Some say the reason is that there are no original stories left to tell–as a writer and lover of stories, I don’t think that’s true at all. I think the problem might actually be that a lot of big studios are afraid of investing money in something unless it has an established fan base, ensuring the biggest bang for their buck.

Regardless of the reason, sequels and reboots can be a double-edged sword. The aforementioned benefit of an existing fanbase may draw more people into the box offices, but those fans can often be more critical of the film because it’s something they love so dearly.

We like to keep things positive here at TLN so I below are my three favorite reboots:

  1. Star Trek – As a huge fan of all things Trek, I was thrilled when the first reboot was announced. I grew up on The Next Generation and consider Star Trek my sort of gateway-drug in terms of Sci-Fi. Both movies have been brilliant. The casting couldn’t be more perfect and their use of an alternate timeline allows them flexibility to tell a new version of the story fans already love. These movies are also hugely successful at balancing fan service with making the films accessible to the non-fans as well.
  2. Casino Royale – I absolutely love James Bond. Not all of his incarnations are created equal, but I’ve seen them all and adore them–cheese and all. The rebooted films with Daniel Craig are wonderful. Daniel Craig and Sean Connery are absolutely the best Bonds ever.
  3. The Dark Knight Trilogy – First of all, it’s Batman and anyone who says they don’t like batman is just full of crap or has zero taste. And what’s not to love? He’s a “super hero” who is completely human. Christopher Nolan did an amazing job retelling the story we all no so well of characters who are much beloved.

I will definitely be seeing Jurassic World next week so keep an eye out for my review on this latest installment in the Jurassic Franchise!
