R is for Rowling

We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the great J.K. Rowling. The woman brought us Harry Potter and made us all wish we’d find have an owl show up one day and deliver our letter from Hogwarts.

J.K. Rowling is one of our notable nerds not just because Harry Potter can be found in the fandom list for every Lady Nerd, but also because she did the thing we all really want to do. She created this rich, wonderful world and wove for us a beautifully complex story. She made us think. She made us feel. She inspired us.

The thing that makes Ms. Rowling even greater is that she’s still humble and incredibly grateful for everything that Harry Potter has brought to her. I heard an interview with her on NPR where she discussed A Casual Vacancy and the reaction of some who disliked that she moved away from Harry Potter to do something different. She told the interviewer that she will always be thankful for Harry Potter because it has given her so much and the fans have been so supportive, but now she wants to explore other things as well, regardless of what the haters might say. I have to commend that attitude (also, she said it much more eloquently than I’ve summarized).

She’s also using her power for good now. She’s recently launched a new campaign #LetsTalkLumos, which aims to raise awareness for children living in orphanages and other institutions. You can see more about that over at her website.

Celebrities who use their influence for good this way, make me feel good about supporting their careers. J.K. Rowling gave us Harry Potter so we’re going to love her for that no matter what, but knowing she’s trying to improve the lives of children all over the world makes me feel good about loving her. So here’s to you, Ms. Rowling.
