Video games have been a big part of my life, thanks to my stellar gaming parents. I have, along the way, become quite attached to several characters from my favorite games–games I played with those wonderful parents of mine, games I’ve played with friends, and even games that continue to take up a lot of my time and energy (here’s looking at you, World of Warcraft).
I could write for hours and days about my favorite video games characters, but for the sake of time and brevity (so many of you could comment “tl;dr” if I didn’t grant some sort of reprieve), I will give you my top three.
Of course he’s number one, and of course he’s a favorite. Savior of Hyrule, skilled archer and swordsman, and protector of Princess Zelda (when she needs protecting–which is more often than she’d like). He is a man of few words but one of action, and he commits to doing the right thing. I like that trait in my heroes (which explains my love of Superman and Captain America, which puts me in the minority in the Nerd Realm).
One of my favorite parts in the Zelda game series is in Twilight Princess when Link learns his sword fighting skills from the Hero’s Shade. I am of the opinion, based on him being named Ancient Hero in the Hyrule Historia, that he is a manifestation of Link from Ocarina of Time. A lot of Zelda fans share this view, and I think it’s a pretty neat connection.
(Just in case you’re curious, Ocarina of Time is my favorite Zelda game, with Twilight Princess and A Link to the Past both as close seconds.)
Here is a writing playlist:
Metroid was one of the coolest games I remember playing as a kid, and Metroid: Prime was unbelievable. Samus Aran has remained one of the most badass characters in the video game industry because she’s intelligent, she’s a fighter, and she has cool gadgets–not to mention that Phazon Suit is incredible.
And a lot needs to be said about the Metroid: Prime soundtrack because that music is out of this world (please forgive the pun). The Magma Caverns remains a favorite, but the overworld theme is so beautiful. Below is a three-hour video (you’re welcome) as well as a link for a playlist for specific track selection.
(Note: We don’t talk about Other M so DON’T ASK. It’s right up there with Final Fantasy: X-2 and Superman Returns. They’re all the family members who don’t get invited to Thanksgiving because no one wants to talk to them.)
The Crown Prince of Lordaeron and infamous Lich King himself. His story is pretty tragic, and that makes for a delicious villain. His relationship with famed paladin, Uther the Lightbringer, and his love interest in Jaina Proudmoore–GAH! IT’S SO GOOD! Guys. Guys.
The Culling of Stratholme instance, where you go back in time and try to help Arthas rid Stratholme of the undead, was SO FUN. What a great story.
The Lich King expansion was so great. WoW has regained its fun with the newest one, Warlords of Draenor, but Lich King will always be my favorite.
There’s a great book by Christie Golden for you Arthas fans out there. I absolutely do not regret reading this book. LOVED IT.
BONUS: The Pride of Oklahoma does us proud, indeed, with this rad marching band halftime show. Feast your eyes AND ears:
Bonus 2: Luigi’s Death Stare
I was pretty stoked at the attention Luigi gained (I was always Player 2 and had a fond attachment to Luigi as a result). Here is a cute video: Kids React to Luigi’s Death Stare!
